Carrathool
Carrathool began its life as a way station serving those en route between Narrandera and Hay. Town plots went on sale in 1865 and the first hotel was opened on the south side of the river in 1868.
Early Carrathool.
A colourful description of early life in Carrathool was printed in the Riverine Grazier, in 1889;
"There was not a decent street in the place, and in wet weather one had to plough through the liquid mud. The majority of the people have a dictionary of their own manufacture, and the commandments are totally disregarded. For slang and unmentionable adjectives, little Carrathool reigns pre-eminently above all other inland towns."
Re printed in The Riverine Grazier, 18 Dec 2002, p11, Blast from the Past, 100 Years Ago, The Myth of Currathool.

FAMILY HOTEL, Carrathool.
1884-1894 HERRIOTT'S FAMILY HOTEL
In 1882, William Herriott sold the South Hay Hotel, and relocated his family to Carrathool, where he built “the Family Hotel”. William became engaged in a dispute with the rival hotelier, and this possibly contributed to his early death in the following year, caused by heart disease. His wife Elizabeth continued to operate the Family Hotel, until she died in 1897. Their daughter Elizabeth continued to live at Carrathool until she married J.C. Smith (Coach Proprieter) from Hay, in 1902.

The One Tree. a.k.a. One Tree Tank, The 20 Whim, and the One Tree Hotel.
One Tree Hotel is 38 km north of Hay, and was built on land that was originally part of the Ulonga Station pastoral holding. It was named after the single, 100 feet high eucalypt that grew on the saltbush plain nearby. In June 1864, a reserve of 4 square mile in size, was declared around the tree.
A very good description of the 'One Tree' was published in the Pastoral Times in 1866. It was attributed to 'An Old Overlander",

An Old Overlander writes:-

Coming from Booligal to Hay, old associations impelled me to visit
the “One Tree,” that stands about half-a-mile from Finch’s
public-house, from which it derives its name, and about half-way
between the two townships just mentioned.

Many a camp fire has blazed at the root of the one tree, and the
under-branches were chopped away to boil the billy, but it still
defies time and civilisation. Cleopatra’s needle possesses less
interest to old overlanders than this one tree. The hieroglyphics
are disappearing fast, and many that “whittled” their names (a habit
peculiar to the Anglo-saxon) have been gathered to their fathers, and
will spin the camp-fire yarn no more. It requires an initiated
antiquarian, like myself, to decipher them. The broad arrow, which
bears the date 1861, has been added to the list, and it is to be hoped
that it may long preserve it from the ruthless axe.

The tree is partly occupied by the carrion crow and the lonely hawk,
which seem to live in harmony together, but the “caw, caw, caw,
a’, a’, a’,” peculiar to the Lachlan, is the only sound that greats the ear.

Pastoral Times, dated 10 Feb 1866.
The tree survived until it was blown over in a storm, on new years eve, 1897. The wood was used for fuel by the hotel. In 1901, half an acre of land was gazetted as a forest reserve, and five new trees were planted.
The first hotel was built there in 1862 as Finch's Inn and it was about half a mile from the actual tree. It was built by William Davies, and he used adzed pine slabs for the construction, which he obtained from Eurugabah Station. source (12) & (36)
The rebuilt hotel had a bar, two parlours, two bedrooms, a seperate kitchen, and two 2 horse stables.
The "One Tree" served as a staging post on the Cobb and Co. run between Hay and Wilcannia, until the service ended in 1914.
In May 1867, Mrs Johnstone is recorded as treating a traveller, who had been lost on the plains for over three days.

During his time there, Rudd (in 1884) also leased the huge government tank nearby, which watered up to 12,000 sheep at a time. Horse and bullock teams of up to a thousand in number were watered there at the change at the charge of per penny a head.

The inn was purchased by the McQuade family in the 1880's who still own it. Although the original structure was burnt down in 1901 the insurance claim stated that recompense could only be made if the building was rebuilt exactly as it had been, so the current hotel is a replica. The license lapsed in the 1940s when it became a private residence. It is currently derelict. One Tree was proclaimed a village in 1885 though it never grew and the old building is a lone sentinel on the plains today.
